New students promise to 'take on challenges and consider others' at the entrance ceremony for the 2016 academic year 2016-02-23 Ajou University’s entrance ceremony for the 2016 academic year was held at 10 a.m. on February 23rd in the University’s Gymnasium The ceremony began with a report on academic affairs by Vice President for Academic Affairs Suk Chul Rim, the declaration of admissions approval by President Dong Yeon Kim, the pledge by the representatives of the entering class, remarks by President Kim, and a congratulatory address by the French Ambassador to the Republic of Korea. Seong Jin Moon and Eun Gyeong Lee represented the incoming class of 2,056 students in leading a pledge. They promised to become Ajou people who will devote themselves to studying, have the courage to confront challenges, consider others, including the underprivileged, and contribute to making the society a better place to live in. In his remarks, President Kim said, "You have become members of Ajou, which is a university on the forefront of change, and I would like to emphasize the values of 'taking on challenges and considering others,'" adding, "One of the most important things that you should do as a University student is to 'find what you really want to do.'" He went on to say, "You should find your own dreams through a series of challenges and trial and error," requesting, "I ask that you always behave in a mature way as adults by considering those who are by your side and those who are weaker and more disadvantaged than you." In his address, French Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Fabien Penone said, "I would like to congratulate you on beating the competition to enter Ajou University," advising, "I hope that you will enjoy your times at the University." The entrance ceremony was followed by the Special Talk Show by Professor Yung Ho Cho (Department of Business Administration) and congratulatory performances by the cheering squad Centaur.

Ajou's Digital Humanities Project Group under the College of Humanities successfully holds the '2016 Korea-China University Students Exchange Camp' 2016-02-23 From January 4th to the 8th, Ajou University's Digital Humanities Project Group (Director Kyung Hoon Jung) under the College of Humanities held the '2016 Korea-China University Students Exchange Camp' together with Peking University in China. From Ajou University, a total of 22 people participated in the Camp, including 17 students from the College of Humanities and 5 professors of the Digital Humanities Track, and they took part in an academic seminar with students from Peking University and visited Korean companies in China and local cultural assets, etc. The academic seminar for undergraduate students, which was co-hosted by Ajou's Digital Humanities Project Group and the China Development Institute of Peking University, was attended by six teams from Ajou University and five teams from Peking University to present on their respective research about cultural phenomena and industry, and humanities. An interesting contrast between their presentations was that Peking's students used surveys and statistical analysis as the key methodology, while Ajou's students adopted data-mining analysis by collecting Big Data from the Internet and literary texts. Presentations and discussions during the seminar were all conducted in English. It was a follow-up event under the MOU on mutual cooperation in education and research, which was signed in January 2015 between the Digital Humanities Project Group and the China Development Institute. Based on the camp’s success, the two organizations agreed to conduct regular academic exchanges between students from the two universities.

The Center has been in charge of planning, promotion, consulting, and student selection for the Creative Activity Semester, and it will play a leading role in operating the program. After presenting gifts to all the participants, President Dong Yeon Kim said, "I appreciate your hard work in preparing the Creative Activity Semester so far and ask for your continued efforts for the program’s operation in the future."

About 2,900 students receive certificates of degrees at Ajou’s graduation ceremony for the 2015 Academic Year 2016-02-22 The graduation ceremony for the 2015 academic year was held at 2 p.m. on February 22nd in Ajou University’s Gymnasium. At the graduation ceremony, 1,630 students received their bachelor’s degree, 234 students received their master’s degree, and 87 students received their doctoral degree certificates. From among the 1,630 students who obtained bachelor degrees, 215 students became dual degree holders and 93 students received the degrees for their minors. The total number of those who obtained degrees during the 2015 academic year reached 2,440 for bachelor’s degrees, 389 for master’s degrees, and 160 for doctoral degrees, including those who received degrees last August (810 for bachelor’s degrees, 155 for master’s degrees, and 58 for doctoral degrees). The commencement ceremony began with a pledge to the nation, followed by a report of conferred degrees by Vice President for Academic Affairs Suk Chul Rim, remarks by President Dong Yeon Kim, words of response by the representative of the graduates, awards presentations, and degree conferment. The ceremony was attended by Chairman Ho Seok Choo of the Daewoo Educational Foundation, President Kim, Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi, Deans of the Colleges under the University, and Chairman Beom Jae Lee of the General Alumni Association. In his remarks, President Dong Yeon Kim said, "As President, the most pleasant and happiest moments for me over the last year were when I met with you in person and we shared our concerns and thoughts," adding, "Today, I would like to mention failures and frustrations as you leave the University." President Kim went on to say, "You don’t have to worry about challenges because failures and trials and errors will not simply remain as 'painful memories,'" adding, "The University will 'feel responsible' for and stand by you until each and every one of you establish yourselves in respective positions." Ajou appoints 28 new professors for spring semester of the 2016 academic year 2016-02-19 A ceremony for presenting certificates of appointment to Ajou University’s new professors for the spring semester of the 2016 academic year took place on the morning of February 18th in Conference Room 1 of Yulgok Hall, along with an orientation. The number of newly appointed professors is twenty eight, including 13 professors for the University and 15 professors for the University Hospital. The ceremony was attended by Ajou’s President Dong Yeon Kim, Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi, Dean of the Graduate School Joong Soon Jang, and other professors with administrative positions, as well as the new professors. In his greetings, President Kim said, “I would like to thank you and congratulate you on becoming members of the Ajou family,” adding, “I ask you to renew your commitment and make great contributions to the University in the future." World-OKTA and Ajou agree to run the Global Startup Academy 2016-02-19 On February 16th, Ajou University President Dong Yeon Kim, Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi, and other officials attended the opening ceremony for the World-OKTA Global Business Center and discussed bilateral exchanges and cooperation with World-OKTA (World Federation of Overseas Korean Traders Associations). World-OKTA established the Center as a launch pad that helps small- and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) enter and build presence in overseas markets and assists young people to start businesses and find jobs abroad. The Center is located in KINTEX in Goyang City, Gyeonggi-do. World-OKTA was established in 1981 as an association of economic and trade activities for Korean businesspeople based in different countries around the globe. World-OKTA Chairman Ki Chool Park said, "The World-OKTA Global Business Center will serve as a mecca where young Koreans at home and abroad can join hands to start businesses in the global market and will become a reliable platform for small and medium exporters to advance into overseas markets," adding, "We will use half of the nearly 500 square meters of the Center as a business startup support center for young people and work together with Ajou on the program design and operation." Ajou has steadily pursued various exchanges and cooperation with World-OKTA. In particular, the two sides agreed to run the 'World-OKTA & Ajou University Global Startup Academy' within the Center. The Academy will assist young Koreans at home and abroad in starting businesses and support companies run by overseas Koreans, etc. Regarding the Academy, the University plans to support World-OKTA by actively utilizing its know-how from operating internship and corporate support programs. In his congratulatory message, President Kim said, "I expect that the Global Business Center will play a significant role amid the challenging economic environment," adding, "Ajou will be actively involved in operating the 'World-OKTA & Ajou University Global Startup Academy' as a partner." The two sides agreed to continue the 'OKTA Internship Program,' which began last year, and prepare the '2016 Korea Tour and Local Training for the World-OKTA Next Generation Trade School' as they continue to discuss the program details. The Next Generation Trade School is a program that World-OKTA has been running for overseas Koreans to foster the next generation of economic leaders.

Ajou's team led by Professor Ju Min Kim develops an analysis device that prevents molecular damage 2016-02-18 An Ajou University team led by Professor Ju Min Kim (Department of Chemical Engineering, Graduate School's Department of Energy System Research) developed technology that can considerably improve the performance of animal cell culturing devices, which produce proteins, antibodies, or hormones, etc. Professor Kim said he teamed up with Professor Wook Ryol Hwang (School of Mechanical Engineering, Gyeongsang National University) to develop a fluidic device that can precisely adjust the size of gaseous bubbles formed within animal cell culturing devices. Yeong Bok Bae of Ajou's Graduate School participated in the research as the first author, and Professor Gwang Lee from Ajou's School of Medicine joined as a collaborator. Their findings were published as the cover paper in the first 2016 issue of The Lab on a Chip, a world-class academic journal published by the U.K.'s Royal Society of Chemistry. In order to raise the productivity of animal cell culturing devices, it is critical to create conditions that prevent molecular damage. It has been known that molecular damage is mainly caused by the stress generated from bursting oxygen bubbles that must be supplied in culturing cells. Professor Kim's team developed a molecular damage measuring device and an air bubble control device that work within molecular culturing equipment, along with a microfluidic mixer that can adjust the liquid flow. He then applied the devices to cell culturing equipment. Professor Kim said, "Cell culturing requires a steady supply of plenty of oxygen bubbles to the animal culturing equipment," adding, "However, intense stress occurs due to the bursting of oxygen bubbles when their diameters reach 5mm or less." Professor Kim went on to say, "In the research, we succeeded in identifying the maximum size of gaseous bubbles that do not cause molecular damage by measuring the critical stress of molecular damage. The finding will contribute to reducing molecular damage." If the efficiency of this technology improves further, it is expected to greatly contribute to enhancing the productivity of various medical products including artificial hearts. President Hun Many from the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia visits Ajou to discuss bilateral exchanges 2016-02-12 A delegation led by President Hun Many from the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC) visited Ajou University on February 5th to discuss types of bilateral exchanges. President Hun is the third son of Prime Minister Hun Sen and serving as the leader of UYFC, a representative association of Cambodia’s youth. It was established in 1978 to educate young people of the country and provides vocational training and education on health and leadership and conducts community service, etc. During their stay at Ajou, the delegation of President Hun had a meeting with students from the University and discussed support from the Cambodian government for young people to start businesses and various opportunities in and the potential of the Cambodian market, etc. The meeting was attended by students from Ajou's business startup club, Cambodian students attending the Graduate School of International Studies under the University, and those who will participate in the Global Business Developer program, which is operated by the Cambodian Office of the Korea Trade & Investment Promotion Agency to help young people start businesses and find jobs. The meeting was followed by a welcome luncheon hosted by Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim. Vice President for Student Affairs Jai Hyoung Cho and Vice President for External Relations Byung Chun So also joined the event. Ajou is selected as the Best Promotion University at the KUSF Awards 2016-02-05 Ajou University was selected as the Best Promotion University for its soccer team at the '2015 Korea University Sport Federation (KUSF) Awards.' The University took home the award in the category for the second straight year after winning it in 2014. Ajou received a plaque and prize money at the award ceremony, which was held on February 4th at the Renaissance Hotel Seoul during the 2016 KUSF General Assembly. In order to establish a sporting culture in which many Ajou people participate, the University is operating the soccer team support system, which involves professors, staff members, and students in a similar way to that of professional sports clubs, for the first time among Korean universities. On home game days, the soccer team arranges various events to encourage Ajou people to come out and watch and cheer the team on. On other days, it sells uniforms of its players or promotes upcoming matches at local markets, etc. Thanks to such activities, the University attracted 1,010 fans to the opening game and a combined 4,050 spectators throughout the 2015 U-League, which is more than any other university according to the official statistics compiled by the Korea Football Association. Unlike 2014, when KFA only collected data on university soccer teams, the rankings for 2015 are based on data on all the university sports in the country. This is expected to further boost the goal of Ajou's soccer team to be the leader of university sports culture. In other categories at the KUSF Awards, Mi Seon Choi from Kwangju Women's University’s archery team was chosen as the Excellent Academic Performance Student and Manager Sang Bok Lee from Dong Eui University's badminton team was selected as the Outstanding Leader.

Ajou holds the 2016 Vice President's Workshop for one night and two days 2016-02-03 Ajou University held the 2016 Vice President's Workshop for one night and two days (February 1st and 2nd) at the KB Ingenium located in Suwon. The Workshop was attended by President Dong Yeon Kim, Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi, Dean of the Graduate School Joong Soon Jang, and all the vice presidents from the University. During the event, participants discussed and shared development directions of the University. For every issue, not only the responsible departments but team leaders and staff members who are interested joined discussions and presented a variety of ideas in a comfortable setting. Hence, there were heated debates on each and every topic, which made the discussions last longer than scheduled. The Workshop began with a presentation on a survey of Ajou's image, followed by discussions of 13 issues, including the Creative Activity Semester, a talent-fostering project tailored to social needs, strategies for improving university evaluation criteria, the remodeling of the University library, the campus master plan, fostering student employment, promoting research activities, the Ajourian Project, directions for the University's globalization, changes in admission policies, improving the scholarship system, Pleasant Innovation & mentoring programs, and inviting professors. In his evaluation to conclude the workshop, President Kim said, "We started the workshop with survey findings on the University's image, and I ask that we prepare for the future by clearly understanding Ajou's current status from objective viewpoints. He added, "We should constantly ask questions in our day-to-day work in order not to get lost in the work itself, but to remind ourselves of our goals and directions," emphasizing, "You should not be bound to existing practices." President Kim went on to say, "The workshop was very helpful in establishing plans and directions for the University's development by sharing various in-depth ideas among participants," requesting, "I ask that all the Ajou people continue to take interest in the general operation of the University from broader perspectives."

Gwanggyo Jungang (Ajou University) Station opens as part of the newly dedicated extension of the New Bundang Subway Line 2016-01-29 The extension of the New Bundang Subway Line (from Jeongja to Gwanggyo) begins service on January 30th. The extended segment includes Gwanggyo Jungang (Ajou University) Station, which is expected to greatly improve transportation convenience for Ajou people and visitors to the University. The extended section is 13.8 km long and includes Jeongja, Dongcheon, Suji-gu Office, Seongbok, Sanghyeon, Gwanggyo Jungang (Ajou University), and Gwanggyo (Kyonggi University) stations. It is connected to the existing New Bundang Line running from Gangnam to Jeongja and allows direct access to Pangyo, Cheonggyesan, Yangjae Citizen's Forest, Yangjae, and Gangnam stations. It takes about 37 minutes to travel between Gwanggyo and Gangnam, the stations on either end of the New Bundang Line. Operating hours for the New Bundang Subway Line are from 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. the next day (through midnight on weekends and national holidays), and the interval between trains is five minutes during rush hours and eight minutes for the other hours. Following the opening of Gwangyo Jungang (Ajou University) Station, Ajou plans to run commuting and shuttle buses between the Station and the University starting in late February. A ceremony, which was held on January 29th at Gwangyo Jungang (Ajou University) Station to dedicate the extended subway line, was attended by relevant officials, including Minister of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Ho In Kang, Gyeonggi Provincial Governor Kyung Pil Nam, Suwon City Mayor Tae Young Yeom, and Ajou President Dong Yeon Kim. Prior to the ceremony, there was an event for delivering plaques of appreciation in Ajou's Yulgok Hall. President Dong Yeon Kim presented plaques of appreciation to President Beom Jae Lee (entering class of 1973, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) of the General Alumni Association and alumnus Gwi Seok Oh (entering class of 1978, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Vice Principal of Maehyang Middle School) for their contributions to have the words "Ajou University" included in the official name "Gwanggyo Jungang Station."
